They expected to live quietly in retirement on 2 1/2 acres in the countryside. But it hasn't exactly worked out that way. For the past six months, the Purcells, along with a handful of others, have organized meetings, launched Web sites and worked the tables at community events, all with the goal of galvanizing opposition to a sprawling 3,000-acre intermodal rail facility proposed for LaPorte's farm fields.
