Intermodal sites bring economic growth, worries about impact

Blair Purcell spent his first 28 years of life in LaPorte County, Ind., and after a 40-year absence, he and his wife, Margot, returned to the area nearly two years ago. They expected to live quietly in retirement on 2 1/2 acres in the countryside.
But it hasn't exactly worked out that way.
For the past six months, the Purcells, along with a handful of others, have organized meetings, launched Web sites and worked the tables at community events, all with the goal of galvanizing opposition to a sprawling 3,000-acre intermodal rail facility proposed for LaPorte's farm fields.
